Welcome to Ulm, the home of world records! Try and say this tongue twister really fast: “In Ulm, um Ulm, und um Ulm herum” (English: in Ulm, about Ulm and all around Ulm). If you manage this, you might pass as a local of this quirky city. And no doubt about it, this town will take you by surprise and the first surprise is that Ulm likes statistics. Here you will find the most crooked house in the world, according to Guinness World Records, the world's oldest sculpture, dating 40,000 years ago or the tallest cathedral spire in the world. But when it comes to statistics and numbers, in Ulm everything is relative since it is also the hometown of Albert Einstein. Let’s discover this and more in a walking tour that covers the main highlights of this unique city!

Und nun, was tun? Hängt esvom kulturellen Hintergrund ab, wer was schön findet? Wanda Hazel Gág,1893 in New Ulm geboren, starb1946 in New York City.

Bombing of Ulm in World War II

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The city of Ulm was heavily bombed during World War II. The heaviest air raid was on 17 December 1944, which killed and injured hundreds but left 25,000 people homeless. By the end of the war, 81% of the city centre was destroyed. Only 1,763 out of 12,756 buildings were intact. But Ulm Münster still towered above the ruins, as it was left intact by Allied bombers who utilized it as a navigational landmark. Water-filled bomb craters covered the ground, following the rain. The rubble was so thick that walking was almost impossible.

Cologne Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church in Cologne, Germany. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne and is under the administration of the archdiocese of Cologne. It is renowned as a monument of Christianity, of German Catholicism in particular, of Gothic architecture and of the continuing faith and perseverance of the people of the city in which it stands. It is dedicated to Saint Peter and the Blessed Virgin Mary. The cathedral is a World Heritage Site, one of the best-known architectural monuments in Germany, and Cologne's most famous landmark, described by UNESCO as an exceptional work of human creative genius. Construction of Cologne Cathedral began in 1248 and took, with interruptions, until 1880 to complete a period of over 600 years. It is 144.5 metres long, 86.5 m wide and its two towers are 157 m tall. The cathedral is one of the world's largest churches and the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe. For four years, 1880-84, it was the tallest structure in the world, until the completion of the Washington Monument. It has the second-tallest church spires, only surpassed by the single spire of Ulm Cathedral, completed 10 years later in 1890

This book, co-published by The Walther Collection, presents selections from Guy Tillim's most influential works and series of the last decade, including Mai Mai militia in training, Jo'burg, Avenue Patrice Lumumba, and Second Nature. Anchored in photojournalism but working against the grain of spectacle, Tillim portrays the communities, social landscapes, and symbolic structures of societies altered by conflict. From explorations of modernist architecture-and its utopian ruins-in post-colonial Angola, Congo, and Mozambique, to the homes and private lives of Johannesburg's inner-city residents, Tillim's work raises timely questions about the politics and representation of the built environment.Co-published with The Walther Collection, Neu-Ulm, Germany and New York
